The Amazing British Museum
Among the countless tourist attractions in contemporary London, such as the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace, the one that can easily be considered the unforgettable "Queen" amongst them all, is the British Museum. Britain's national museum of archaeology and antiquities was established by an act of Parliament in 1753, when the government purchased three large private collections consisting of books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, paintings, medals, coins, seals, cameos, and natural curiosities. Today, home of approximately seven million objects from all continents, the British museum is considered to be the most popular and famous museum in the world.

Students Present Award Winning Projects at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery
Washington (PRWEB) June 11, 2007 -- See history come alive in dramatic performances, exhibits and documentaries on Wednesday, June 13. Young history scholars selected from Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin will present their work reflecting this year's National History Day theme "Triumph and Tragedy in History" between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Performances will take place in the museums' Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium while documentaries and exhibits will be on display in the auditorium lobby. Visitors can reach the auditorium via the museums' G Street lobby.
The 22 students selected to present their projects are part of a larger group of more than 2,000 finalists participating in the National History Day (NHD) national contest at the University of Maryland June 10-14. These young historians are bringing with them the products of months of research - creative presentations in the form of research papers, dramatic performances, documentaries, and exhibits.
The NHD program annually engages more than half a million participants in grades 6-12 across America.
More than a student competition, NHD is a campaign to change the teaching and learning of history our nation's classrooms. The program is having a profound impact on education and received the Charles Frankel Prize for Public Programming from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through publications and education programs, NHD trains teachers to move students beyond textbooks and expand their classrooms to include libraries, museums and archives. More information is available at www.nhd.org.
The National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, part of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, are located at Eighth and F streets, N.W. in Washington, D.C., above the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail station.
